The FLOWING STREAMS project concludes with the launch of the publication of the same name, bringing together the research conducted this year by the artists and practitioners involved in the project in rural areas across Romania. Coordinated by Nicoleta Moise, the publication compiles a living archive of the situated cultural ecology of water\u2014exploring what could potentially be restored in terms of infrastructure, practices or knowledge, and what could be reimagined as a way of responding both to the specific characteristics of a place and to the global effects of climate change.<\/p>\n
The multi-residency project FLOWING STREAMS, an initiative of EUNIC Romania curated by Adelina Luft, facilitated an exercise in building bridges: between artistic proposals and the rural world, between European practitioners and local organisations, and between existing hydrological conditions and future possibilities for restoring relationships between people and water.<\/p>\n

ABOUT FLOWING STREAMS<\/p>\n
The FLOWING STREAMS artistic residency project, centred on the cultural ecology of water, took place throughout 2024 and involved artists from seven countries. Initiated by Tamina Bojoanc\u0103 (British Council), Cristiana T\u0103utu (Funda\u021bia9) and Pawel Rutkowski (Polish Institute), and curated by Adelina Luft, it was conceived as a series of short-term residencies for artists and practitioners based in seven countries affiliated with the network of European cultural institutes in Romania.<\/p>\n
In spring 2024, following an open call that received 170 applications, the project team selected seven residents, each supported by a cultural institute representing their country of origin: Harun Morrison (UK) at In Context Sl\u0103nic Moldova \u2013 British Council Romania; V\u00e1clav \u0160ana (Czechia) at the Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life \u2013 Czech Centre; Magdalena Siemaszko (Poland) at Eforie Colorat \u2013 Polish Institute; waterybeings (Nele Br\u00f6kelmann and June Yu, the Netherlands) at Reziden\u021ba Lubeni\u021ba \/ Watermelon Residency \u2013 Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; Orsolya G\u00e1l (Romania) at Intersec\u021bia \u2013 Funda\u021bia9; Joanna von Essen (Germany) at TERRRA \u2013 School of Planetary Gardeners \u2013 Goethe-Institut Bucharest; and Alice Pontiggia (Italy) at CUCA (C\u00e2r\u021bi\u0219oara Cultural Centre) \u2013 Italian Cultural Institute in Bucharest. During the summer, they conducted research at their respective locations, hosted by local organisations, exploring the interconnectedness of water, land and life while creating a space for co-learning and mutual listening through the involvement of practitioners from different fields and local residents.<\/p>\n
During their brief stays, the residents took on the task of mapping the social and cultural imbalances affecting relationships with water, beyond the immediate reality of severe drought. Their findings, proposals and approaches, together with the possible local interventions they suggested, can be found in the limited-edition FLOWING STREAMS publication.<\/p>\n
