OPEN CALL FLOWING STREAMS

FLOWING STREAMS is a multi-residency project in rural areas of Romania exploring local approaches to the cultural ecology of water, designed and developed by EUNIC Romania. It involves seven cultural institutions operating in Romania – theBritish Council, the Czech Centre, the Embassy of the Netherlands, the Goethe-Institut, the Italian Institute for Culture, the Polish Institute and Fundația9, each engaged in supporting one residency. The project was framed by this consortium of European partners, in collaboration with curator Adelina Luft.

Submission deadline: Initial deadline – 7 April 2024. *The deadline has been extended to 21st April*

Period of residencies: 10-14 days at various dates between June to August 2024

Place of residencies: rural areas of Romania

Who can apply: interdisciplinary and socially-engaged artists, architects/landscape architects, hydrologists, anthropologists, community organisers

Eligibility: citizens or permanent residents from: Czech Republic, Italy, UK, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland and Romania

Please apply to the residency by filling out this application form in English by the latest Sunday, April 21st, 2024, 23:59 CET

Details about the residencies and participation are available on this link

Romania’s rural landscape represents 90% of the country’s territory, with diverse climates and natural resources. Lack of investment in rural areas has generated scarcity and limited opportunities for inhabitants, but it has also left nature to survive on its own, with many areas still holding old forests, wetlands and rich biodiversity. Sadly, corruption and poor policies to protect the natural environment, connected with lack of ecological education, are threatening the sustainable development of these areas.

The seven European practitioners selected will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily life of the Romanian village and explore the context of water specific to each location, hosted and mediated by a partnering organisation. Located in different rural areas of Romania, the host organisations have been running dedicated programmes around notions and practices that recontextualize the rural space and the natural environment through a reorientation of sensibilities and from a new paradigm of ecological knowledge. Through the residencies, participants are encouraged to explore local cosmovisions and practices around water, its relationship with customs, traditions, or occupations, by listening, sharing and exchanging with the spaces as sites of interpellation. These encounters are intended to open up new possibilities of reclaiming knowledge linked to a territory, historical memory and ecology, and to map a network of existing or potential socio-ecological practices that restore our relationship with water.

After the representatives from the Flowing Streams project and partnering institutions have evaluated the applications, there will be a round of interviews with shortlisted candidates taking place online.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by 8 May 2024.

Odesa 09 International Literature Festival in Bucharest

This month, from the 22nd to the 25th of February, Bucharest hosts the 9th edition of the Odesa International Literature Festival, a long-standing project that has become a touring event due to the war. During the four days of the festival, the public in Bucharest will have the opportunity to participate in no less than 20 events, with a wide variety of activities: from debates on highly relevant and diverse topics to poetry recitals and public readings, along with film screenings and musical performances.

Hosted at the Goethe-Institut Bucharest (Calea Dorobanți 32), this year’s edition of the Odesa International Literature Festival opens on Thursday, the 22nd of February, at 17:00, with a message from the two founders of the project, cultural managers Ulrich Schreiber (Germany) and Hans Ruprecht (Switzerland), followed by a message from Laura Napolitano, head of the Italian Institute of Culture in Bucharest and president of EUNIC Romania, the institution behind the project. The inaugural speech will be delivered by Radu Vancu, writer, essayist, translator and professor at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, and one of the most prominent civic voices in Romania.

„Europe we have to build with our words: a Europe in which words are used not to build death, or ideologies of extermination – but a Europe in which words are witness against barbarity. Where words stand witness that people can be murdered – but not destroyed. Where we keep our words in the service of fellow humans, and not of ideologies.  Because we now know: where words fail, history fails. And it becomes horror again.

We have to build a Europe where words do not fail the human. Not again. Or else everything literature ever stood for, everything arts ever stood for – was simply a lie.The only Europe which is not a dead civilisation is this one: a Europe where words to not fail the human.” (Radu Vancu

The same evening, at 18:30, the public has the opportunity to meet Philippe Sands, British writer and lawyer of French descent, professor of international law and director of the Centre for International Courts and Tribunals at University College London. Freedom of expression, human rights, the roots of genocide and crimes against humanity are just some of the topics he will discuss with journalist Marian Voicu.

At 20:00, poetry lovers will be able to enjoy public readings by Paula Erizanu from the Republic of Moldova—one of the best-known writers of the new generation and an esteemed European journalist in the cultural arena—together with Ukrainian writer Iya Kiva—poet, translator and graphic designer, concerned with topics such as language, wordlessness, identity and memory, collective and personal experiences of war, trauma and alienation—and Vasyl Makhno—poet, essayist and multi-award-winning translator, who explores the concepts of homeland and memory in his books, revealing the polyphonic past of his birthplace. The moderator of the evening will be the Romanian-born German writer and translator Ernest Wichner.

The musical highlight of the evening will be provided by the musician Florin Bica, an artist known to music lovers thanks to his presence at important events such as Bucharest Jazz Festival or ”George Enescu” Festival, but also as a constant collaborator of the Big Band Radio Romania.

On the second day of the festival, Friday the 23rd of February, at 14:00, literature lovers in Bucharest will have the opportunity to meet Yury Vynnyciuk, a living legend of Ukrainian literature, considered the most versatile of contemporary Ukrainian writers, a tireless critic of the political system, who anticipated today’s war in his works. He will be in dialogue with Ukrainian poet, essayist and translator Vasyl Makhno.

At 15:30, there will be a meeting with the Swiss writer Ariane von Graffenried, author and spoken word performer, member of the duo “Fitzgerald & Rimini” and curator of the Basel International Poetry Festival. Ariane von Graffenried is a versatile writer who transitions with ease from Swiss German to standard German, mixing it with French, English or Albanian; she is a writer who is capable of traversing broad literary landscapes, writing about forgotten and unrecognised female figures and combining the fantasy with facts.

Under the motto “Populist PlanetVoices of a World in Turmoil”, a meeting with the Swiss writer and essayist Jonas Lüscher will take place at 17:00 and will be chaired by Joachim Umlauf, head of the Goethe-Institut Bucharest. What unites populists around the world, what sets them apart and what impact does this have on life in each case? Are the promises and temptations of populists similar? And if so, what kind of world and society do populists promise? These are just some of the questions that will be answered in the meeting with Jonas Lüscher.

At 18:30, there will be a dialogue on a highly interesting topic that has been the subject of dozens of research papers over the years: war and drugs. A theme that is very much present in the history of the Second World War, but also reminds us of the notorious “War on Drugs” declared by Richard Nixon in 1972, drugs that have claimed tens of thousands of lives around the world, and the helplessness with which this war is fought. The special guest is Norman Ohler, author of two major books on the subject, the first of which, Der totale Rausch: Drogen im Dritten Reich (2015), translated into more than 30 languages and added to the New York Times bestseller list, describes the consequences of drug abuse among military and political leaders. His latest book, The Strongest Substance (2023), sheds light on the history of the rise of LSD and explains the difference between the drug’s three functions: as an intoxicant, as a mind-control tool and as a cure.

The evening ends with a virtual encounter with acclaimed German writer Daniel Kehlmann at 20:00. He will read a short excerpt from his novel TYLL, one of the most successful German literary novels of the last five years, nominated for the International Booker Prize in 2020 and currently being screened for an upcoming Netflix series. The novel, published in Romanian in the collection Anansi. World Fiction from Pandora M Publishing, translated by Maria Irod, was extremely well received by Romanian readers.

The dialogue with Daniel Kehlmann will be chaired by cultural journalist Matei Martin.

Ukrainian literature will be the subject of a worldwide reading on the third day of the festival, Saturday the 24th of February at 12:00, to mark two years since the outbreak of war. The occasion will include readings of poems by Ukrainian writers Viktoria Amelina, Maksîm Krîvțov and Volodimir Vakulenko, all of whom perished during the war. Important names of the international literary scene such as Vasyl Makhno, Svitlana Bondar, Yury Vynnyciuk (Ukraine), Marie Iljašenko (Czech Republic), Jan Konnefke (Germany / Romania, online), Halyna Kruk (Ukraine, online), Daniel Kehlmann (Germany, online), Héctor Abad Faciolince (Colombia, online), Nichita Danilov, Dan Sociu (Romania) will participate online and in person.

On the same day, at 15:00, writer and journalist Olivier Guez, awarded the German Film Prize for his screenplay Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer, talks to writer Norman Ohler about Europe’s past, present and future, about the taken and missed opportunities in achieving the European dream in a time of deep political and cultural change.

At 16:30, the film Scarred Hearts (2016) will be screened. The film was directed and written by Radu Jude and is a screenplay of the novel of the same name by Max Blecher. At 18:00, the screening will be followed by a dialogue on the same subject between literary critic Doris Mironescu and Ernest Wichner.

At 19:30, there will be a public reading—poems by Ernest Wichner, one of the most important German poets of Romanian origin, Marie Iljašenko from the Czech Republic, a multi-award-winning author whose poems have been translated into over 15 languages, and Nichita Danilov, a Romanian writer who captures in his books the spiritual and metaphysical heritage of his homeland Romania in a surrealist poetics with playful and ironic expression. The host of the evening will be writer and translator Horațiu Decuble.

The last event of the evening will take place at Cinema Elvire Popesco, at 20:00. It is a screening of Photophobia, a 2023 docudrama written and directed by Ivan Ostrochovský and Pavol Pekarčík. The film premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival as part of the “Giornate degli Autori” section, where it won the Europa Cinemas Label Award. Co-produced by Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, Photophobia was filmed in Ukraine during the Russian invasion and was later selected as the Slovak entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

The first event of the last day of the festival, Sunday the 25th of February, starting at 11:00, is a dialogue between the Italian writer Ilaria Gaspari, known for her passion for podcasts dedicated to the works of famous writers: a blend of memories, quotes, excerpts and poems, some of which are original recordings of readings—the material also includes a search for traces of Ingeborg Bachmann’s life in Rome—and the poet, cultural manager and journalist Răzvan Țupa.

At 12:30, it is time for Black Sea Stories, a project of the Goethe-Institut and the Goethe Centre Yerevan. Five writers from Black Sea countries will meet for an exchange of views on regionality, identity, and the possibilities of a common language in the context of current crises in literature: Lavinia Braniște (Romania), Eka Kevanishvili (Georgia), Anush Kocharyan (Armenia), Halyna Kruk (Ukraine) and Ina Vultchanova (Bulgaria). Chair: Arevik Ashkharoyan, with an introduction by Jan-Tage Kühling (Goethe Centre Yerevan).

At 14:00, the programme will include a dialogue with Karl-Markus Gauss, Austrian writer and publisher, winner of the prestigious Leipzig Book Fair Prize for European Understanding in 2022, known for his books in the field of travel literature. An expert on the countries and landscapes of Eastern Europe and described by the critics of the Wiener Zeitung as “a great philosopher of disappearance, who wants to save people and things, the silenced and the forgotten in our memory”, Karl-Markus Gauss will discuss this special form of literature with Romanian writer Marius Chivu.

At 15:30, the audience will meet Romanian writer Nora Iuga and the host of the event, poet Ernest Wichner, translator of Nora Iuga’s poems into German. The beloved Romanian writer and award-winning translator of German literature will read from her poems, first published in 1968.

At 17:00, the German writer Norris von Schirach, famous among Romanian readers for his novel Blasse Helden (Romanian edition: Cei mai frumoși ani din viața lui Anton; Humanitas Fiction, translated by Victor Scoradeț, 2021), will have a dialogue with the writer and translator Horațiu Decuble.

The events will conclude with a double public poetry reading, scheduled for 18:30, bringing together writers Nichita Danilov and Dan Sociu, hosted by Ernest Wichner.

Readings and debates at the festival will be held in English, Ukrainian and Romanian, with translation. Public access to the event is free of charge. The full programme of the festival can be found on the official website: www.litfestodessa.com.

Joint Statement on the Occasion of Bucharest Pride 2023

Bucharest, 27 July 2023

We, the undersigned diplomatic missions and international organisations in Bucharest, express our support for Bucharest Pride 2023. This is the 18th edition of this annual event celebrating the diversity and dignity of the LGBTIQ+ community in Romania.

Bucharest Pride, and all Pride events across Romania, are important occasions to stand up for LGBTIQ+ rights and inclusion. We commend the organisers, volunteers and participants for their work and commitment to achieve equality.

We reaffirm our commitment to respecting, promoting and protecting the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and human rights for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or sex characteristics.

We firmly support the LGBTIQ+ community in Romania in its pursuit of equal rights, in accordance with international human rights law and the principle of universal human rights. The European Court of Human Rights has established a strong framework for protecting the rights of LGBTIQ+ people. The Court has set out obligations to ensure equality under national laws, such as the establishment of effective hate crime response mechanisms, legal protection for same-sex families and a transparent, consistent, and accessible legal gender recognition procedure for transgender people.

In this context, we encourage the Romanian authorities to address any current legal gaps for the full realisation of LGBTIQ+ rights.

Equality, diversity, non-discrimination and respect for universal human rights are part of our core values, and we must act to defend these values, both at home and globally. We recognise that more needs to be done to achieve full equality for LGBTIQ+ persons.

We will continue to work with Romanian authorities and civil society to ensure that all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Signed by the following diplomatic missions and international organisations in Bucharest, listed in alphabetical order:

Argentina; Austria; Belgium; Canada; Chile; Croatia; Cyprus; Czechia; Denmark; Estonia; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Ireland; Israel; Italy; Lithuania; Mexico; Netherlands; Norway; Portugal; Slovenia; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; United Kingdom; United States of America; European Commission Representation in Romania; International Organization for Migration (IOM), Romania; UNHCR Representation in Romania

⏰Friday, June 23rd, from 18.00

  • 𝐄𝐯𝐚 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚́𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐳 (Spain) ~“¿Cómo llamar a esto?”

𝐄𝐯𝐚 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚́𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐳 – composition, voice, sax
𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐩 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐫 – arragements & guitar

Through this work, the artist reaffirms her commitment to creativity by writing all of the songs and making her debut as a lyricist in her two mother tongues, Catalan and Spanish.

Often inspired by the idea of trying to send a message to herself as a child, she writes in a simple and visual way about love and heartbreak, about haste and patience, about honesty and lies…

In the songs that make up the album, musical styles such as jazz, singer-songwriter and bolero coexist, all of them being very present in the artist’s sound imagery.

In this concert, Eva Fernández will have Josep Munar, a Mallorcan guitarist with whom she has been working together on all her songs and albums for more than seven years. Together they will go on a sound journey from their beginnings until now.

  • 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 solo (Austria) ~„Dedicated“

On his sophomore solo release “Dedicated”, Vienna-based jazz pianist and composer Martin Listabarth dives deep into the topic of personal inspirations, resulting in an album that combines tonal elegance and musical ingenuity with playfulness, wit and a heavy dose of storytelling.
It’s not unusual for a musician to dedicate an album or song to someone that has been influential in their life.
Austrian pianist Martin Listabarth takes this one step further, though, using the story of 10 people who’ve fascinated or inspired him as the basis of 10 highly original compositions.
Musically, it’s a treasure trove of solo piano technique, running the full spectrum from soft and melancholic to dramatic and bold. Shimmering, classical-inspired ballads give way to blues-infused vamps and high-octane swing.
The resulting collection of music is both playful and challenging, accessible yet complex – something heightened by the narrative that inspires each song.

“Hercule Poirot” dedicated to the author Agatha Christie sits alongside tributes to an eclectic cast of characters including Michael Köhlmeier („Fairy Tales and Myths“), the soccer player Diego Maradona („The Hand of God“) and magician, showman and pub owner Basilio Calafati („Calafati’s Carousel“)…

⏰Saturday, June 24th, from 18.00

  • 𝐍𝐨𝐞́ 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐜 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐨 (France)

𝐍𝐨𝐞́ 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐜 – accordion
𝐂𝐥𝐞́𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐨 – double bass
𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧-𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞̀𝐫𝐞 – drums

Their first album “Secret Place”, released on the NoMadMusic label, features landscapes that are sometimes urban, sometimes wild, speaks of encounters and invites us to travel. It is a virtuoso and highly modern combination of three instruments rarely brought together.

”The jazz magician can create an intimate bond with his audience through the senses, and for his first album, the Noé Clerc Trio has chosen the dreamy way. From the outset, the young trio moves us by revealing its musical intimacy and its various inspirations in “Secret Place”. (…) The ear happily wanders through this secret garden, a painting in which the three young musicians show great maturity in the finesse of their lines and the choice of colours. The palette is daring: blues, contemporary jazz, impressionist and traditional music.”

  • 𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐨 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐢 (Italy)

The concept album is the synthesis of Paolo’s twenty-five years of living together with his orchestral guitar, pushed to the limit of expressive timbral potential, but the narration is weaved by the nasal voice with a Sardinian-Iberian flavour, which relies on the quatrains of Gallura and Logudorese poets of the 1700s and 1800s.

Rade’s music emerges like a wreck loaded with memory, wrapped in blinding light, the long sea is a silver surface, the Sardinian chant blends and confuses with sonorities that evoke a secular prayer.

Rade is the must of the last century, forgotten in the galley, aged, which leaves the tannin in the glass glasses, to abandon oneself to the memory of light visions embalmed by the saltiness. The light of the sea enters our homes, with the explosive force of a Mediterranean avant-garde transmitted orally by a joyful Charon who, imagining a navigation that knows no borders, expresses himself in a thousand languages, uses them for a moment and then throws them away.

⏰ Sunday, June 25th, from 18.00

Pianist and composer Nikol Bóková is one of the greatest discoveries of the Czech music scene. In addition to performing classical repertoire, she devotes herself intensively to her own creative work that transcends genre boundaries and is appreciated by classical music listeners, jazz audiences, and music critics, as evidenced by numerous awards. In 202, she received the Czech Music Academy’s Anděl Award in the Jazz category for her album Prometheus. In the same year, she founded her own music label, Soleil et Pluie. Both albums released by Soleil et Pluie so far, Elements and Naked Pieces, won the award Jantar for best albums of the year 2022 in the category of popular music. THEMATIC FOCUS 2023

Continuity and transformation of cultural practices beyond the European Capital of Culture year – Resource awareness and networked-creativity as Legacy generators

In this year’s edition of the CMA, we aim to explore different types of practices and their support for creation, their sustainability and their ability to self-perpetuate with the prospect of diminished funding, after the Title year, but with continued dialogue, learning, and network design. We are looking for existing communities of sustainable practices and networks that develop such approaches and focus on working with them on these subjects. In addition, we plan on asking the following questions:

  • What is common between the ECOCs in terms of sustainability?
  • How to generate alternative funding and material / human capabilities?
  • How to connect networks? Who knows who… and what is, really, a partnership?
  • What are the ECOCs introducing for community engagement and participatory process?
  • How to sustain and develop decentralized cultural practices that proved optimal in terms of results and resources, and are developed by small local and independent operators, after ECOC?

Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own practice and refer to other existing practices in the ECoC cities to have a critical approach and to identify strategies, methods, tools and resources that can be sustained via innovative cultural management practices, whatever future context might be.

CMA 2023 offers the opportunity to learn from international trainers and develop new skills, to share ideas that will contribute to the development of the cultural sector through a continuous process of reflection on the ECoC journey and the road ahead.

Curators

The programme offers the opportunity to participate in 3 intensive seminars, including lectures, workshops, interactive exercises, collective and individual sessions, and other capacity-building formats dealing with the topic of the CMA 2023. We want to create a platform for exchanging horizontal knowledge and developing ideas. They offer a quality process without the ambition to solve anything or produce an outcome. Each participant, including the organizers and guest lecturers, will teach and learn in a rich environment suitable for knowledge-production while creating a safe space for dialogue and a shared understanding of matters at stake.

The programme is curated by a representative from each ECoC 2023 implementation team:

Angeliki Lampiri / ECoC 2023 Eleusis – is Director of Cultural Training of 2023 Eleusis, joining the team during the bid process for the ECoC title in 2016. She is the project manager of a wide range of projects, designed to build capacities and networking in cultural and local communities, as well as taking care of international relations and participation in European projects.

Krisztina Forro / ECoC 2023 Veszprém-Balaton – is Senior Project Manager at Veszprém-Balaton 2023 (VEB 2023). Her role and tasks are to strengthen outreach and capacity building with long term community development, focusing on the horizontal aims of the ECoC Program by managing family friendly, accessible, and environmentally sustainable program development.

Alex Boca / ECoC 2023 Timișoara – is a curator and a cultural manager from Timișoara, interested in experimental arts, emerging culture and maieutics. He is trained as a philosophical practitioner and as a visual artist with experience in the independent cultural scene before joining the Timișoara European Capital of Culture program.

About
